The cases trend is age related...It is the younger element that is causing the numbers to rise...

Public Health Wales has reported 481 more people testing positive for coronavirus, but no further deaths with the virus, in its latest figures. Data shows Wales' case rate is 66.5 per 100,000, up from 64.8 on Wednesday  the highest since 22 February. On Thursday, the total number of Covid cases reported in Wales reached 218,726 and total deaths remained at 5,575.

While case rates continue to climb, numbers of Covid patients in Wales' hospitals have fallen to a record low. PHW figures also show that more than half of the new coronavirus cases are being reported among young people. Of those who tested positive, 57% were under the age of 30, with high case rates for under 25s across North Wales and Cardiff. The majority of new Covid cases are affecting young people, following on from the trend in recent days. In parts of North Wales, case rates among under 25s are especially high, with the age group experiencing 54% of cases in Flintshire, while in Conwy the figure is 51%.

In Cardiff, 77% of the area's 293 positive results over the last week were among the under 25s. In local hotspot areas, cases have also shot up, including Cathays, Cardiff, where there have been 103 cases in the past two weeks.

Numbers of Covid patients in hospital have hit another new low and are in double figures for the first time since the start of the pandemic. There were 88 patients classed as confirmed, suspected or recovering from Covid in hospital on Tuesday. The average for the past week is 108 patients, also a low. Numbers of recovering patients those in rehab or waiting for discharge, but no longer testing positive for Covid have also dropped considerably.

Confirmed Covid patients, there are 27 in hospital beds, mostly in Cardiff and Vale, Betsi Cadwaladr and Aneurin Bevan. Although this is twice the figure a month ago, it was five times higher at the end of March. Hospital admissions remain low an average of five a day over the past week, the equivalent of 0.4% of all admissions. Monday saw a record low of one Covid patient admitted.

Covid-19 vaccine update: 2,259,622 people in Wales have now had their first dose of the vaccine. 1,677,738 people are now fully vaccinated.
