Numbers rising...a bit like the tide...rise and fall and rise again...

Wales' Covid-infection and positive-test rates have raised again with 670 more people testing positive for coronavirus, but no further deaths. Public Health Wales figures show Wales' case rate is now 53.1 per 100,000 people and the positivity rate is 3.6%. The latest figures cover the 48 hours up to 09:00 BST on Monday. They bring the total number of Covid cases in Wales to 217,452, while total deaths remain at 5,575.

The highest case rates for the seven-day period leading up to 23 June were in North Wales, with Flintshire on 142.9 cases per 100,000 people, Denbighshire on 104.5 and Wrexham on 91.2. The lowest were seen in Merthyr Tydfil 16.6, Newport 20 and Carmarthenshire 21.7. Of the 670 new positive cases, six areas had more than 100 each, with 240 in Cardiff, 223 in Flintshire, 161 in Swansea, 124 in Wrexham, 106 in Conwy and 100 in Denbighshire.

Wales' national case rate was below 10 a month ago while the positivity rate was below 1% but both have risen since and PHW has warned of concern over a significant increase in cases across North Wales. Eight areas now have case rates of more than 50 per 100,000 people. Wales' first minister said there were about 1,100 cases of the Delta variant of concern that originated in India, in Wales on Friday - more than double last week's total.

Mark Drakeford also said there was "a big gap" between the two age groups with the all-Wales rate around 67 cases per 100,000 people in the under 25s compared with 9 cases per 100,000 for the over 60s.

Covid-19 vaccine update: 2,253,214 people in Wales have now had their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine. 1,627,242 people are now fully vaccinated.
