The number of confirmed cases of the Delta variant of concern, which originated in India, has increased, with 87 more cases reported in Wales in the last week.
One person has died with coronavirus in
Wales, after two weeks of no deaths being recorded, reports Public Health
Wales. It takes the total deaths to 5,571 people according to Public Health Wales data. It comes as
Wales' case rate continues to rise, climbing to 12.4 per 100,000 people,
up from 11.2 on Wednesday. Due to the way data is reported by health boards,
figures show the person died in the Aneurin Bevan Health Board area on 5 June,
but the death was only been added to data on Thursday.
Conwy County where a cluster of the Delta variant
has been confirmed has the highest case rate in Wales. However, the case
rates have fallen in the county, from 30.7
per 100,000 on Wednesday to 29. Swansea where a cluster has been
linked to a city centre pub is the next highest on 23.1. Newport and Carmarthenshire have also crept up slightly due
to local clusters.
While Merthyr Tydfil once had the highest Covid case rate in the UK, it now has one of the lowest. Despite a school having to close due to a confirmed case of the Delta variant, the area now has the lowest case rate in Wales, with 3.3 cases per 100,000. Caerphilly, Bridgend, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Vale of Glamorgan, Ceredigion and Monmouthshire also all have case rates in single figures.
Eight counties in Wales have seen fewer than 10
positive cases in the past seven days. Clusters of cases have been confirmed in
Pontyberem in Carmarthenshire, with hotspots in Sketty, Swansea, and Maindee,
Newport. While the number of people being treated in hospital for Covid-19
appears to have risen slightly, patient numbers remain relatively low.
