Big leap in numbers today...48 hours of data reported...Omicron has gripped Wales over Christmas...


The number of new cases reported today are for a 48-hour period up to 9am on 29 December, and not a 24-hour period as usual.  The number of deaths reported today is for a 24-hour period.

There have been 21,051 new cases of coronavirus reported today by PHW bringing the total cases to 621,732. There were 3 coronavirus deaths reported by PHW so the total number of deaths has risen to 6,556. The infection rate in Wales has gone up to 1,092.5 per 100,000 people an increase on the 1,079.3 reported on Wednesday.  This is the highest figure at any stage of the pandemic. The local authority with the highest infection rate in Wales for the seven days from December 19 to 25 is Cardiff, where the figure is 1,364.1, while Newport, Torfaen, Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, the Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Ceredigion, and Swansea all have rates in excess of 1,000.

Hywel Dda Health Board today is reporting 2,121 cases in the area made up with 964 in Carmarthenshire, 695 in Pembrokeshire and 462 in Ceredigion. Today it was reported that there were 604 people in general and acute hospital beds with coronavirus (confirmed, suspected, and recovering), a rise on the 444 last reported a week earlier on December 22.
