Public Health Wales publishes the figures and this data was published on Friday, May 14. It provides the numbers for areas with an average of 7,000 people, called middle super output areas (MSOA). In practice this means there are statistics for areas like Canton in Cardiff, Morriston in Swansea, and Porth in Rhondda. The data shows there are 13 places in Wales with more than 50 cases per 100,000 of population. The areas with the most cases are:

  • Stow Hill, Newport - 122
  • Pembrey & Burry Port, Carmarthenshire - 96.2
  • South Riverside, Cardiff - 94.2
  • Cathays South & Bute Park, Cardiff - 86.9
  • Splott, Cardiff - 81.1
  • Cathays North, Cardiff - 74.2
  • Harlech & Llanbedr, Gwynedd - 67.3
  • Bettws, Newport - 62.2
  • Wrexham West, Wrexham - 60
  • Victoria & Somerton, Newport - 59
  • Llanfyllin & Llanwyddyn, Powys - 54.7
  • Caerleon, Newport - 51.4
  • Malpas, Newport - 51

There has been one more death with Covid-19 reported in Wales, reports Public Health Wales. It means the total number of deaths reported by PHW now stands at 5,559. A further 54 people have tested positive for the virus, with Wales' infection rate rising slightly to 9.5 cases per 100,000 people. The newly-reported death was recorded in the Swansea Bay Health Board area.

Of the new cases, 15 were reported in Cardiff and 5 in Newport, the two council areas with the highest case rates in Wales. Newport's case rate stands at 27.8 infections per 100,000 people over the most recent seven day period, ahead of Cardiff 17.2, Ceredigion 12.4 and Gwynedd 11.2. However, Gwynedd and Ceredigion were the only counties to report no new cases in Sunday's figures. Anglesey and Blaenau Gwent both 2.9 have the lowest infection rates in Wales.


Covid-19 vaccine update: 2,019,160 people in Wales have now had their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, 915,674 people are now fully vaccinated.
