There have been no new deaths with Covid-19
reported in Wales, reports Public Health Wales (PHW). The total number of deaths reported by PHW remains at 5,558, with one new death reported on Thursday. A further 54 people have tested positive for the virus, taking the total number
of cases to 212,095. Wales' seven-day infection rate has risen slightly from 8.9 cases for every 100,000 people to 9 cases. Of the new cases, 21 were reported in Cardiff while 14 were reported in Newport. In the week to 9 May, the highest case
rates in Wales were in Newport with 28.4 cases per 100,000 people followed by Cardiff 15.5 and Wrexham 11.8. The lowest were in Blaenau Gwent and Anglesey both 2.9 and Conwy and Bridgend 3.4.
Details of the latest Covid variants being detected in Wales were also published on Thursday. There have been 9 more of the India variants identified in Wales in the last week, but there were 900 more identified in England. Three more of the first type (VUI-21APR-01) taking Wales to a total of 15 and 6 of the second, which is considered to spread more easily (VUI-21APR-02) up to 11. One more case of the South African variant was found up to 38. The UK Kent variant is still dominant, though only 166 cases were found when the virus make-up was examined in the last week.
The number of people who have had their first coronavirus vaccine dose is almost at two million with 1,990,783 jabs received. Of those, 891,569 have received their second dose and are fully vaccinated.Today’s numbers of Covid-19 cases in the local areas of Llanelli…
