Are we winning the war...? The numbers point in that direction...

Wales has reported no further Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours for the fourth time in the last eight days. Wales' case rate has dropped to its lowest since 1 September with 11.9 per 100,000 people testing positive while weekly average case numbers are also at their lowest for eight months.

Public Health Wales confirmed 35 new Covid cases on Wednesday and no deaths. Wales is now averaging about 50 Covid cases a week, compared to about 3,500 over the same period in December. The number of people who have died with coronavirus remains at 5,514 while the total number of cases standing at 211,389.

 

There have 10 days since 20 March without a Covid death and the rolling average daily death rate in Wales is 1.1 people. Eight Welsh counties reported no new Covid cases on Wednesday with a further seven reporting just one positive test. The lowest rates are seen in Denbighshire, Pembrokeshire and Merthyr Tydfil.

 

The Health Board with the highest number of deaths is Cwm Taf Morgannwg and areas have seen some of the highest case rates in the UK during the pandemic. But on Wednesday the counties that make up the Health Board Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf recorded one new case on Wednesday. As well as Bridgend and Merthyr, Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire, Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire and Powys recorded no new cases.

 

PHW's figures show that more 1.8m people have now had their first dose of the Covid vaccine while 715,425 have had two doses. A total of 3,297,673 Covid tests have been taken since the start of the pandemic with 1,935,450 people tested.
