Today is the thirtieth anniversary of my father passing away from natural causes, I remember the day well as I was on a North Sea Oil platform miles away from shore and even further away from my dad who was in Bryntirion Hospital in Llanelli. I had said goodbye to him nearly a fortnight before because I knew in my heart that I would not have the pleasure of his company ever again. The call came on Friday 17th May 1991 at 10:45 at the platform.  I was due home on the following Wednesday but the message was that he was not expected to last the day.  There was a helicopter in the oilfield so I was given a seat to fly back to Aberdeen to get home and in my own mind hopefully before he left us.

It was not to be though; I phoned home from Aberdeen station but sadly the goodbyes I said nearly two weeks earlier were the last words between us. The rail journey from Aberdeen to Bristol was difficult but gave me the time to reflect on the times we spent together, the arguments, the payday loan I always had off him on a Wednesday evening when I was an apprentice and the phone calls that I received to tell me that he had won the News of the World bingo… Always after checking his numbers for him I found that he had made a mistake and to his disappointment he never managed to fill the bingo card.

He did not suffer too greatly and he had most of his family around him when he passed, the family were able to attend his funeral without any restrictions and the day he went off to heaven was a day of celebration of his hard working, loving, sometimes cantankerous and always on Christmas Eve merry through one too many self…

I write this to compare the difficulties that many families in Wales and the rest of the UK are experiencing at this time of the pandemic by family members dying of the Covid-19 virus. Unable to say goodbye to their loved ones, more than likely been apart for quite some time due to being in an ICU ward and because of the lockdown restrictions a minimalistic funeral to be able to pay their respects. Please remember that the restrictions on travel and mixing with others is to try and eradicate this virus from our shores and to attempt to stop those families in our communities from suffering the heartache and loss that so many families have and without doubt others probably will experience in the days, weeks and months ahead. Stay safe and well please…
