A bleak start to 2021...Someone switched off the light...

On a dank, cold, snowy and wet first Saturday of the New Year the numbers from Public Health Wales do not fill us with the promise of hope and release from the grip of this fatal virus which is relentlessly costing lives not only in Wales but around the UK. Although there was no report on New Year's Day, the numbers reported today means that many families are grieving for their loved ones that have succumbed to the virus.

Today's update from Public Health Wales...

Wales COVID-19 update – 02 January 2021.

Public Health Wales has issued the following information with regard to vaccination of individuals in Wales.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has recommended that as many people on the JCVI priority list as possible should be offered a first vaccine dose as the initial priority. This decision has been adopted in Wales.

More first doses will allow us to offer protection from COVID-19 to more people in the priority groups more quickly and will ultimately save lives. JCVI advise a single dose of vaccine offers high levels of short-term protection.

Practically this does mean that second doses will be delayed but everyone receiving the vaccine will still receive their second dose up to 12 weeks after the first dose, for longer term protection

If you have received your first dose, your health board will contact you accordingly to rearrange your appointment within this timescale. Please do not phone your health board, they will be in touch with you.

This is a particularly important decision at a time when COVID is still spreading in Wales. The clinical risk priority order for deployment of the vaccines remains unchanged and applies to both vaccines now available. Both are very effective vaccines.

Remember the Guidelines...
